Bringing Back Ski Club

Bringing a Ski Club

Back to Lake Tippecanoe

Dear Lake Tippecanoe Property Owners,

Like many of you, my greatest memories from childhood are on Lake Tippecanoe. For 15 years, I spent every weekend at the lake and learned to love recreational water skiing. As a student at Indiana University, I joined the IU Water Ski Club and discovered tournament skiing. If you are not familiar with competition water skiing, let me briefly explain the sport. A water skiing tournament consists of three events: jump, trick, and slalom. In jump, participants ski over a five foot tall ramp and receive points based on distance jumped. Trick skiers ride a small, wide ski and earn points for maneuvers such as 360 degree surface spins and flips. Slalom is the most popular event. In slalom competition, skiers strive to swerve around buoys with the shortest rope at the fastest speed possible. I quickly discovered that skiing the buoy course is an entirely new challenge apart from open water recreational skiing.

As you may know, Lake Tippecanoe once had a slalom buoy course and a club of avid skiers during a time when slalom water ski courses were a common feature on many public lakes. However, courses on public waters are a rarity today as competitive skiers opt for the conditions of private lakes. Consequently, awareness of tournament water skiing and club participation among recreational skiers has faded. Awareness may be faded but you need only look out your window at dusk and dawn to see the many individuals on Tippy who still love to ski. Bringing a ski club back will inspire the people of Lake Tippecanoe to connect with each other and explore competition water skiing.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources has approved the installation of a slalom course along the shore of the Ball Wetlands and Nature Preserve on James Lake, also known as Little Tippy. If we receive enough interest and support from community members like you, we hope to launch an official slalom club. The club will serve to connect the skiers on Tippy and raise funds for the purchase of a slalom course, maintenance, and insurance.

If you would like to be a part of this new club or have questions, comments, or concerns, please email me at tippyslalomclub@gmail.com.

Sincerely,
Laura J. Emaus
