Work continues on the dam and locks in Grassy Creek. When completed, attention will be focused on the Tippecanoe control structure. The sluice gates have been barely operable the past few years. The maintenance should allow our dam keeper to more easily regulate the level of our lake.

Recent conversations with LTPO members leads me to believe that weeds and algae, and the efforts to control them, are a priority topic. With the Aquatic Plant Management document completed, LTPO has formulated a treatment plan for this summer.

Last week I attended a strategic planning session for Tippecanoe Lake and Watershed Foundation (TELWF) at Camp Crosley. While the subject matter was critical, the beauty of the day and of the lake caused my mind to wander.

Great news!—Lake Tippecanoe Property Owners (LTPO) was awarded the second largest grant for 2006 lake aquatic vegetation management. Not so great news—LTPO did not receive the total amount requested for our aquatic plant management projects.

Clean water in our lakes is constantly pressured from many sources: overdevelopment of lake properties, noxious weeds, fertilizers, and malfunctioning septic systems, just to name a few. The Indiana Lakes Preservation Act places power and control of freshwater lakes in trust by the state for the use of its citizens.

Laws are laws, but only for others. Recent experiences this summer on our lakes have left me troubled by the actions of a few that endanger many. I was actually happy to see 4th of July week reach an end with a number of inexperienced, inebriated, and uninformed boaters leaving (hopefully) until next year.

My comments last month regarding boating laws provoked numerous comments and e-mails from lake residents. Apparently I am not the only laker that has experienced the unsafe operation of boats and personal water crafts (PWCs) this summer.

This past November, LTPO met with a biologist from DNR to determine aquatic weed and algae treatment for our lakes. DNR suggested LTPO apply for a LARE grant to study the feasibility of establishing ecozones on the lakes for the protection of aquatic plants and improved water quality.

The DNR mandated LTPO do an Ecozone Feasibility Study as part of the aquatic weed management program. As with all LTPO aquatic programs, the underlying factor is to be proactive in enhancing and preserving clean waters in our lakes.

Waterways such as rivers, estuaries, and lakes are valuable natural resources, as they support municipal, navigational, industrial, and recreational uses. In response to historically increasing levels of use, proper management of waterways is vital. .
